“20 Days in Mariupol” is rich in brief yet profoundly tragic human stories. Through delicate questioning, the director extracts emotions and names from the city’s inhabitants. Chernov’s calm voice narrates the unfolding tragedy, occasionally revealing a hint of irritation when confronted by citizens influenced by Russian propaganda. This moment underscores the film’s recurring theme — the vital role of conveying facts. Each death is a tragic reality, demanding acknowledgment despite the emotional toll.
A still from 20 days in Mariupol. Photograph: Evgeniy Maloletka/AP.Ukrainian civilians in Mariupol began looting: some food shops from sheer want, but also other places out of opportunism. A woman who owned a general store – smashed by the shelling – is shown confronting a man who is walking out of it with goods under his arm, including a child’s football which he is shamed into throwing back. But perhaps the people, in their wretchedness, think that this plunder is a tiny recompense for the nightmare they are going through.
