“Dead Man’s Wire” is not much different from Van Sant’s “Drugstore Cowboy” with both characters at the center of the narrative pushed to extreme actions due to societal and economic circumstances. The director also has an eye for spotting talent early on. Matt Damon and Matt Dillon are just some of the faces who stood out for him.Films Poised to Make Academy (and Studio) History. ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, from left: Leonardo DiCaprio, director Paul Thomas Anderson, on set, 2025.
Van Sant’s recreation of this extraordinary moment calls to mind the killing of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby in front of police and press. The personae and performances of Pacino, Domingo and Myha’la complicate the psychopathic nastiness of the affair, and create something surreal and bizarre and often hilarious: a display of, not heartlessness, exactly, but a shrewd professional sense that pity and fear were emotions that could only benefit the kidnapper. It’s a gripping picture with excellent performances. Dead Man’s Wire screened at the Venice film festival.
