Artistic Integrity: Director Michel Franco stays true to his ambitious, harsh style, ensuring a cohesive and unique artistic vision, especially in the well-directed and presented ballet sequences. A Complex Study: The film provides a "tough and unexpected" look at what happens when genuine ambition and vulnerability (Fernando) are manipulated by calculated control (Jennifer).Auteur Vision: Michel Franco’s uncompromising style, while polarizing, is a hallmark of critical success, attracting film festivals and sophisticated audiences.
Michel Franco's Dreams, starring Jessica Chastain, makes a disappointing choice towards the end that sullies the movie's message. This isn’t to say that it completely redeems Jennifer, who is a horrible character as she perpetuates racist micro-aggressions, and represents hypocritical and performative aid. But it does make supporting and empathizing with Fernando difficult. The film ends less like a powerful message and more like a cautionary tale that republicans will show their daughters; a PSA to never date outside your race or you’ll end up raped and domestically abused.
