He’s getting in the way on the set of his breakthrough film, Being John Malkovich (1999), and walks off the stage. “I’ve been on this planet for 40 years, and I’m no closer to understanding a single thing,” he says, “Why am I here?

Love it or hate it–some viewers may wince at the film’s unapologetic indulgence –one thing remains clear: Not one second of Adaptation is boring. The story is actually two narratives, stitched into one weird quilt.
