This third installment is fun, with some great bits of physical comedy and a necessary return to the heartstring-plucking of the first film, but overall it lands in somewhat shallow waters. An improvement over the underachieving Despicable Me 2, if not quite up to the original's snuff."Despicable Me 3" maintains the same animation style we've seen in the previous installments. The colors are vibrant, the character designs are consistent, and the Minions continue to be the visual highlight. However, by this point, the formula is wearing thin.

The many plots of Despicable Me 3 feel like they could barely sustain a short film let alone an entire feature, especially when they don’t really tie together. I could see a short film where Agnes tries to hunt a unicorn or the minions try to escape from prison, but in Despicable Me 3, they all just kind of sit next to each other, rarely interacting and lacking any sort of rewarding payoff.
