The Ballad of Buster Scruggs seeks to expand on life lessons in the Old West with a more realistic portrayal of what life was like.The inevitability of death ties all six vignettes together with one main theme. Be it by natural causes or outside forces, death comes for everyone, and no one can avoid it. In The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, we get dark humor, an abundance of violence, and realism that everyone will die at some point.
The first story is about Buster Scruggs himself, and is a very cartoonish style of execution. While it was entertaining, it seemed somewhat out of place in comparison to the other stories. On the other hand, “Meal Ticket” is very thought-provoking and makes the audience feel real emotion and attachment towards the characters. It is important for each story in the show to have value and relevancy to the others.
