The plot always leans forward, the acting is excellent, and it is relentlessly clever. What’s more, for. the persistent viewer, the film rewards multiple viewings. First come the various hints and clues in the dialogue, and then more subtle hints and clues and winking jokes in the visual storytelling.
Rian Johnson’s Knives Out isn’t just a whodunit—it’s a how-the-hell-did-he-pull-this-off. A love letter to Christie and Poirot, twisted into modern class politics and anchored by Ana de Armas’ guilt-ridden Marta and Daniel Craig’s donut-hole detective.Each one fully switches the goal of the film and our view of the central mystery, and it’s the kind of three-act plotting one should strive for. Every piece of information is called back later, the dialogue is tight, and characters deliver key pieces of evidence without it being out of character or awkward.
