YouTube TVIn many ways, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is the darkest film that George Lucas has been a part of, and one of the darkest things that Steven Spielberg has ever directed. At first glance, Temple of Doom seems like an adventure film without much depth. However, the film actually is a clever commentary primarily about Indian culture and the dangers of fanatical devotion to an idea or to a religion - and all of the danger this causes. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom feels like the work of Steven Spielberg at his most unguarded, cutting completely loose and working through a lot of stuff. It’s a very candid and very explicit film, lacking a lot of the polish and the cleanliness of Spielberg’s other major works from around this time. That’s what makes it such a fascinating artifact. “Why did it have to be snakes?” To be clear, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a horrifically racist movie.
