When Bella Swan moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest, she falls in love with Edward Cullen, a mysterious classmate who reveals himself to be a 108-year-old vampire. Despite Edward's repeated cautions, Bella can't stay away from him, a fatal move that endangers her own life.
However, these qualms with the story which can’t really be attributed to Hardwicke aside, Twilight (2008) is a masterclass in mood and atmosphere. It’s extremely gothic, not just in how it features vampires, and there is a dauer gloom that seems to hang over the town of Forks. Everything is drenched in this palpable bleakness and in many ways, it so perfectly personifies teen angst and the purgatory that is high school. The blue/green filter that the film is presented in is often joked about now but it’s such a striking visual choice.
