Just like in Oliver Twist, Fagin wields his psychological influence over Dodger, while also genuinely caring for his protégé’s well-being. Their scenes crackle with a mix of resentment and attachment.
I've read some review of Lies of Locke Lamora that described it as "Oliver Twist if Artful Dodger was main character." and my first thought was "no wonder I binged this." Also I find it funny that we got Charles Dickens fanfic show sooner than actual Thorn of Emberlain book.
