“Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” is not just another fantasy tale; it’s a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the passage of time. The storytelling here is exceptional, weaving together two narratives that explore the complexities of emotion and memory. After watching both “Bochi” and “Frieren,” I’m convinced that in ten years, we’ll be talking about Keiichiro Saito the way we talked about Hideaki Anno early in his career. Saito has the potential to be a generational director on the level of Miyazaki or Anno. His ability to blend emotional depth with intricate storytelling sets him apart.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End shows how the protagonist perceives time differently and the story diverges from the narration of other Shonen plots. The first episode itself emphasized her lifespan as well as how the emotional weight of time crashes down on her all at once, but a little too late. This is unlike the typical Shonen narratives, where the episodes need to be fast-paced and often about one particular element. The POV in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End makes all the difference in the world.
