Although rare, some shows nail their tone from the pilot and stay true to it, delivering consistent storytelling, style, and emotional depth.Image via HBO. Succession does not wait to show its teeth. The pilot opens with Logan Roy (Brian Cox) disoriented and urinating in a closet, then quickly shifts to backstabbing brunches and corporate maneuvering. Jesse Armstrong's dialogue is razor-edged and hyper-verbal. The characters are monstrous yet deeply human. From the start, the show marries high drama with dark comedy, creating a tonal cocktail that feels both elite and unhinged.
Like - Succession is a very funny show, often more laugh-a-minute than most comedies, but the narrative is running on brutal, almost Shakespearean drama. An episode of succession without comedy could be boring if handled poorly but an ep without something seriously heavy would seem totally unnecessary and dishonest to the spirit of the show.
