A Scanner Darkly is definitely not for everybody, because its pacing and animation style are not mainstream (the same is true of its release schedule: only 4 theaters on July 7, 8 the next week, and so on). However, for fans of Linklater and/or Dick, this is no doubt a must see, and you should mark July 7th on your calendar.

Richard Linklater.But from A SCANNER DARKLY's grim opening, which tacitly updates Rory Cochrane's good-natured stoner from DAZED & CONFUSED as a total burnout hallucinating bugs forever crawling over his skin, the deep cynicism and dejection is balanced by Linklater's natural sense of humor. Indeed, what I loved most about the film, apart from how beautifully the rotoscoped animation captures the fluidity of Dick's prose, is how it reorients Linklater's penchant for run-on philosophical chat as addict-speak.
