Blue Eye Samurai is a Netflix show released in 2023. Set in Japan’s Edo Period in the 17th century, it explores one of the strongest human desires in an honest tone. It invites us to question suitable forms of storytelling. Being a result of different art forms, animation continues to spark discussions. And for many years one assumption won the stage, animation is for kids.
Blue Eye Samurai weaves a tapestry of archetypes and ultraviolence, setting a new benchmark for storytelling in animation. The series is a deep dive into the themes of isolationism and colonialism in Japan, echoing the era portrayed in Scorsese’s “Silence.” Mizu, the protagonist, is a mixed-race young woman posing as a man. Her story echoes and intensifies the Mulan fable, akin to a narrative directed by Sam Peckinpah or Quentin Tarantino — Disney’s Mulan, but a million times more violent and gritty.
